White House Decries ‘Lack of Competition’ in Container Shipping

The White House criticized a “lack of competition” in the container shipping industry and urged U.S. regulators to do more to ensure domestic importers and exporters can compete fairly in the global economy.


The Federal Maritime Commission, which has jurisdiction to regulate the carriers, “should use all of the tools at its disposal to ensure free and fair competition,” according to a blog post on the White House website.


While the agency has already launched an inquiry into excessive fees when container return deadlines are missed, the FMC “should consider using its other tools” and the Justice Department stands ready ...
