U.S. trade chief takes WTO message to Europe

— U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai is visiting Italy and Switzerland this week for a series of meetings with foreign trade ministers, and her chief message is about bolstering the World Trade Organization.

 

— Treasury officials say the Biden administration is working out arrangements with countries that have imposed digital service taxes, aiming to resolve their ongoing dispute before retaliatory tariffs go into effect.

 

— The eagerly anticipated trade talks between Washington and Beijing kicked off late Friday evening and, as expected, the two sides took opposite stances on China’s non-market behaviors and the U.S.’s existing tariffs.

 

TAI TAKES CALLS FOR STRONGER WTO TO EUROPE: President Joe Biden has repeatedly pledged his support for international governing bodies since taking office, seeking to strike a different tone than the one set by his “America First” predecessor. His trade chief is now carrying that message throughout Europe this week as she calls on her counterparts to help reform and fortify the beleaguered World Trade Organization.

 

Tai will spend Monday and Tuesday in Sorrento, Italy for the G20 Trade and Investment Ministers Meeting. Her message to colleagues will focus on “the need to strengthen multilateral cooperation in the World Trade Organization on issues such as pandemic preparedness and resilience,” as well as “WTO reform, including increasing transparency of government support and leveling the playing field for U.S. workers,” her office said in advance of the trip…
