Ongoing staff shortages hitting processing plants could lead to an influx of EU pork imports, NPA chief executive Zoe Davies told BBC Radio 4’s flagship Today programme on Saturday morning. 

 

Dr Davies explained how a lack of staff due the number of eastern European workers that have returned home means abattoirs can no longer process the number of pigs producers are able to supply them with on a weekly basis.

 

She said: “For the last 6-8 week, all of the major processors have been cutting their kills by up to 25%, leading to pigs being kept on farms for far longer than they should be and that is leading to an absolute crisis for us on the pig side.”

 

The latest AHDB market data shows last week’s pig slaughterings were down by 24,000 head on last year, while average carcase weights are soaring, reaching 88.40kg last week – 1.19kg heavier than the week before, and 3.2kg heavier than a year ago.

 

Asked if the situation is likely to lead to retailers importing more EU pork, Dr Davies added: “The concern is that’s exactly what will happen. We have the pigs, we have the product and the British public wants to buy British pork. However, if the processors are unable to supply the volumes that are required, the likelihood is they will start to look elsewhere.”

 

She pointed out that with EU pork currently trading at 30p/kg less than UK pork due to oversupply issues, it provides a ‘perfect excuse for retailers to ship in much cheaper EU pork...

Farmers could be forced to destroy nearly 100,000 pigs because of a post-Brexit shortage of butchers to work in slaughterhouses.

 

Leading figures in the livestock industry say that the animals face being killed and burned because Home Secretary Priti Patel has failed to include the job on a list of shortage occupations, which would allow foreign butchers to enter the UK on a skilled worker visa.

 

One said they found it baffling that ballet dancers were on the list, but not butchers.

 

Pig farming is the latest industry to be hit by shortages of workers after hundreds of thousands of EU citizens went back to their home countries as a result of Brexit and the pandemic.

 

A shortage of HGV drivers, who are also not on the list, has led to empty supermarket shelves and pushed some drivers' salaries over £50,000, while growers in Scotland said last week they had to destroy 2.5 million broccoli crowns and 1.5 million cauliflowers because of staff shortages.

 

Last week, Greggs became the latest fast-food chain to warn customers about shortages of products, joining McDonald's, Nando's, KFC, Beefeater and Subway.

 

Dr Zoe Davies, chief executive of the National Pig Association, said a 15 per cent shortfall of abattoir butchers had led to a backlog of 85,000 pigs awaiting slaughter, growing by 15,000 every week.

Across the world, a dearth of workers is shaking up food supply chains.

 

In Vietnam, the army is assisting with the rice harvest. In the U.K., farmers are dumping milk because there are no truckers to collect it. Brazil's robusta coffee beans took 120 days to reap this year, rather than the usual 90. And American meatpackers are trying to lure new employees with Apple Watches while fast-food chains raise the prices of burgers and burritos.

 

Whether it's fruit pickers, slaughterhouse workers, truckers, warehouse operators, chefs or waiters, the global food ecosystem is buckling due to a shortage of staff. Supplies are getting hit and some employers are forced to raise wages at a double-digit pace. That's threatening to push food prices – already heated by soaring commodities and freight costs – even higher. Prices in August were up 33% from the same month last year, according to an index compiled by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization.

 

The coronavirus pandemic has helped spark a labor shortfall for many parts of the economy. But the impact is particularly stark in food and agriculture, which are among the world's least-automated industries. Food security is a sensitive issue in many parts of the world and thin margins mean rising costs generally pass through to buyers, according to Boston Consulting Group.

 

"Almost certainly there is disruption," said Decker Walker, BCG's agribusiness expert in Chicago. Effects vary among locations and products, he said, but "the general theme seems to be: The roles with the least desirable working conditions are actually the ones that we have the most pain with."

 

There are signs the labor shortfall is curbing supplies. In the U.S., wholesale distributors like Sysco Corp. and United Natural Foods Inc. are reporting production delays and slowdowns for items ranging from bacon and cheese to coconut water and spices. In the U.K., some stores are running low on staples like bread and chicken, while McDonald's Corp. ran out of milkshakes in August...
