Denmark mandates more hospital space for sows

Pig producers in Denmark must keep 2.5% of stalls as hospital pens, with more space required if producers have an automatic feeding system.

A news release from SEGES explains that pig farms with sows must keep a minimum of 2.5% of the stalls (according to the number of free gestating sows) reserved as hospital pens. This new guidance was adopted after a nine-year transition period that began in 2011.

However, SEGES recommends that this space increase to between 3 and 5% if an electronic feeding system is used. If the barn uses floor feeding or wet feeding, where the sows compete for feed, they recommend that 10% of space be allocated for hospital pens.
