Much ‘enthusiasm’ as vaccines roll out for workers at Cargill meat-packing plant

Nearly 300 workers at the Cargill meat-packing plant in High River filed through the on-site vaccination clinic Thursday morning, receiving their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
Mass vaccination clinics opened at Cargill and the JBS plant in Brooks on Thursday in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among workers. Essential workers at meat-packing facilities have been some of the hardest-hit by outbreaks, so the opening of the clinics has brought much excitement, said Calgary physician Dr. Annalee Coakley.
“This is protection for their health and protection for their families, but it’s also protection for their economic well-being. Over the past year, for all of our essential workers, it’s been incredibly difficult financially,” said Coakley, who helped organize the clinic.
“Judging by the turnout (Thursday) and the enthusiasm, I am very happy with how things have turned out.”

HIGH RIVER, AB – Vaccination clinics are set to begin today, April 29, at two of Canada’s largest beef-packing plants in southern Alberta.
Both the Cargill plant, which is near High River south of Calgary, and J-B-S Canada in Brooks were hit hard by COVID-19 outbreaks last year.
Cargill shut down for two weeks before reopening at reduced capacity, while JBS operated with just a single shift each day for a full month.
