Don't believe the hype around factory farm biogas

Throughout this legislative session, factory farm methane digesters (aka factory farm biogas) has been a new and hot topic.  We've attended all the hearings on the issue and have heard a lot of false or misleading information being presented about this new technology.

It is abundantly clear to us that factory farm biogas is a false solution to Iowa's manure problem.  The purpose of this bill is to pretend to address Iowa’s manure problem while continuing business as usual in Iowa - and even expanding the industry even more.  We need to stop doubling down on the factory farm industry and start transitioning away from it.

Factory farm biogas isn’t even a bandaid on a much larger problem. This technology will further entrench the factory farm industry into our landscape and we will likely see factory farms larger than we've ever seen in Iowa.  Please ask your Senator to vote no on HF 522 and any bill that uses public money to fund factory farm biogas.

Myth #1: “This can't be used for hogs manure because it is not efficient" ...

Myth #2: “This doesn't mean we'll see even bigger factory farms in Iowa" ...

Myth #3: “Methane digesters help water quality” ...

Misstatement #1: “The technology will get better as we build more of them” ...

Misstatement #2: “We can build pipelines to connect multiple facilities to one digester” ...

Red Flag #1: “I think the DNR will oversee this program" ...

Myth #5: “This is a great way to produce clean energy” ...

Myth #6: “This stops antibiotic resistance from developing around confinements” ...
