Cattle slaughter numbers down on the year

Since early April, cow slaughter in Western Canada has been below levels of 2019 and the five-year average, says a provincial livestock market analyst.
As of early December, slaughter was down by more than 280,000 head — which is 25 per cent below 2019 levels and 13 per cent lower than the five-year average, said Jason Wood.
Exports of live cattle and feeder cattle to the U.S. are also down (by nine per cent and 39 per cent respectively) but higher exports of fed cattle and cows “provided market support this year,” he said. Also...
