Deputies: Driver of cattle-hauling trailer fell asleep before I-81 crash; at least 5 cows killed

Virgil, N.Y. — The driver of a tractor-trailer hauling 40 head of cattle fell asleep at the wheel on Interstate 81 early this morning, causing a crash that left him injured and five cows dead.


Cortland County sheriff’s deputies were called to I-81 south in the town of Virgil around 3:22 a.m., where they found the truck up against a grassy embankment off the road.


Deputies said the driver, 26-year-old Eli Hershberger, was hauling around 40 Holstein cows from the town of Sennett in Cayuga County to South Carolina when he fell asleep behind the wheel.


The tractor-trailer drifted off the roadway, went into a center median and eventually overturned onto an embankment.


Hershberger suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by a TLC Ambulance crew. However, as of this morning, five of the cows had died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, deputies said.
