Peter Navarro, the White House trade adviser said the novel Coronavirus was a "product of the Chinese Communist Party." He suggested that the virus which has killed more than 468,300 globally so far may have been purposefully created by the Chinese government, though without providing any immediate evidence.

His claims came along with Beijing's decision to suspend imports of poultry products from an American plant owned by Tyson Inc, an Arkansas-based meat processor, as the Chinese authorities struggle to bring an outbreak in the capital under control. China's General Administration of Customs said on its website that it has decided the suspension after the company confirmed a cluster of Coronavirus cases at the plant, located in Springdale.

Coronavirus: Chinese officials say latest outbreak in Beijing 'is a European strain'

Officials claim the virus is from Europe but is a different, and older, strain to the one currently spreading in Europe.

The recent outbreak of coronavirus in Beijing has been reported to be a European strain, according to Chinese officials who have released information about its genome sequence.

Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) official Zhang Yong revealed the early research data in an article published by the country's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

"According to preliminary genomic and epidemiological study results, the virus is from Europe, but is different from the virus currently spreading in Europe," he said.

"It's older than the virus currently spreading in Europe."

China has been under pressure to make data on the recent outbreak public sooner rather than later, following criticism over how it handled the initial emergence of COVID-19 in the central city of Wuhan late last year.

The country said it has also submitted its latest results to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

WHO chief warns world leaders not to "politicize" pandemic

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — World leaders must not politicize the coronavirus pandemic but unite to fight it, the head of the World Health Organization warned Monday, reminding all that the pandemic is still accelerating and producing record daily increases in infections.

The comments by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who has faced criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, come as the number of reported infections soared in Brazil, Iraq, India and southern and western U.S. states, straining local hospitals.

It took over three months for the world to see 1 million virus infections, but the last 1 million cases have come in just eight days, Tedros said during a videoconference for the Dubai-based World Government Summit.

Tedros never mentioned Trump’s name or the fact that he is determined to pull the United States out of the U.N. health agency but warned against “politicizing” the pandemic.

“The greatest threat we face now is not the virus itself, it’s the lack of global solidarity and global leadership,” he said. “We cannot defeat this pandemic with a divided world.”

Trump has criticized the WHO for its early response to the outbreak and what he considers its excessive praise of China, where the outbreak began, as his administration’s response in the U.S. has come under scrutiny. In response, Trump has threatened to end all U.S. funding for the WHO...
