Kroger Co. is launching a plant-based meats brand that will consist of 50 meatless products.
Downtown-based Kroger (NYSE: KR), the nation’s largest operator of traditional supermarkets, is creating Simple Truth Emerge: Plant Based Fresh Meats. The product line capitalizes on the growing dietary trend by offering fresh burger patties and grinds (similar to ground beef without the meat) at affordable prices.
Simple Truth Emerge expands on Kroger’s Simple Truth Plant Based products it launched last year. Those include vegan chocolate chip cookie dough, oat milk, sour cream, deli slices, sausage and other products.
Simple Truth Emerge’s meat-like plant products aim to provide “the same taste, texture and sizzle on the grill or in a pan” as beef does, Kroger said in a news release. They’re free of genetically modified organisms, dairy, gluten and soy. They provide 20 grams of pea-based protein.
Kroger will sell the products in the traditional meat case of its stores. Kroger has nearly 2,800 stores in 35 states.

A newly launched private line of plant-based fresh meats known as Simple Truth Emerge is hitting Kroger stores nationwide this week as the retailer jumps on exploding consumer interest in alternative proteins.
New pea-based meatless burger patties and grinds under the Emerge label—a line The Kroger Co. says will be priced more affordably than branded counterparts—joins the Simple Truth Plant Based collection introduced last year, offering vegan chocolate chip cookie dough, oat milk, sour cream, deli slices, sausage and other products.
Kroger said Emerge patties and grinds offer the same taste, texture and sizzle on the grill or in a pan as beef and are free of GMOs, dairy, gluten and soy. Simple Truth Emerge patties and grinds provide 20 grams of pea-based protein per serving and are located in the packaged traditional meat case, the Cincinnati-based retailer said.

Kroger is launching new private-label vegan ground beef and burger patties as it seeks to capitalize on growing consumer demand for plant-based meatless substitutes, the company said Wednesday.
The nation’s largest grocery store chain is among many companies creating their own versions of vegan meats that closely mimic the taste of real meat products. Meat producers like Smithfield and Hormel and Big Food companies like Kellogg are trying to jump on the trend sparked by veggie burgers made by Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods.
“Kroger anticipates interest in plant-based products to continue to grow in 2020, with the category being one of the key drivers of our natural and organic sales,” Joe Grieshaber, Kroger’s senior vice president of merchandising, said in a statement.
