Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren blasted Kroger's layoffs of hundreds of local managers last week.

 

Late Friday, the Massachusetts senator retweeted a news article of the layoffs, noting unions were "fighting for Kroger's success, but who in Kroger is fighting for workers?" She also noted Kroger has spent billions on stock buybacks before she added she has a plan "to return power to working people."

 

Kroger officials declined to comment on Warren's tweet, other than citing its previous remarks regarding the cuts.

 

"As part of ongoing talent management, many store operating divisions are evaluating middle management roles and team structures with an eye toward keeping resources close to the customer," Kroger said last week.

 

On Wednesday, Kroger disclosed it was cutting an unspecified number of local management jobs nationwide as it continues to struggle with digital and discount rivals, Amazon and Walmart.

 

Kroger's profit margins have been squeezed by an ongoing price war and the cost of technology to ramp up home delivery and store pickup.

 

The affected jobs at Kroger are nonunion. The company employs more than 450,000 nationwide – a majority of them are unionized.

CINCINATTTI, Ohio – Kroger plans to lay off hundreds of employees, according to reports .

 

In a statement, a spokesperson for the grocery chain said, “As part of ongoing talent management, many store operating divisions are evaluating middle management roles and team structures with an eye toward keeping resources close to the customer.”

 

She added, “Store divisions operate independently but all of them are taking steps to ensure they have the right talent in the right store leadership positions.”
