Cattle prices continue to fall as dry drags on

Official figures out today from Meat and Livestock Australia show the financial impact of the ongoing heatwave.


Cattle producers in eastern states are being hit the hardest, and MLA says most of Australia needs rain.


MLA chief economist Tim McRae says the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator is significantly lower, currently sitting at 311.75 cents a kilogram carcass weight.


"It's 100c/kg cwt below the same time last year, but if you have a look at the contrast of seasons this time last year it was flooding, wondering whether the rain would ever stop.


"This year it's record temperatures and really looking for a dump of rain to just help with feed and water supplies.


"The contrasts in the seasons is very much contrasted in where the prices are."
