JBS is moving ahead with purchasing of the Western Canadian operation of XL Foods and is assuming ownership of their beef processing plant in Brooks, Alberta.

Canadian Cattlemen Association’s Director of Government and International Relations John Masswohl says his country’s cattle producers are pleased with the deal.

Masswohl says Canadian producers are limited in their ability to have their animals processed and the JBS purchase gives them a stable place to take their product rather than exploring costly alternatives.

Last year XL Foods had to recall some of their product after beef tainted with E Coli got out and lead to one of Canada’s largest ever meat recalls.  Masswohl says JBS has taken the proper safety precautions with their operation since assuming management of the facility three months ago.

JBS is also acquiring two of XL’s other beef processing plants and a feedlot, all in Alberta.
