Organic sales growing strongly

Despite the uncertain economy, there's been no slowdown in the sales of organic produce in Australia.

An October Newspoll survey of 1000 grocery shoppers found 61 per cent buy some organic products, up from 43 per cent five years ago.

Organic Federation of Australia chairman, André Leu, says the survey reveals that consumers haven't cut back on organics despite tightening their spending in other areas.

"We actually were concerned that possibly buying organic foods was a discretionary spend, and they would be cutting back," he says.

"But once again, this is consistent data we're getting out of the US and Europe.

"In the US, they've been in a downturn for a year and there is no sign of spending on organic products easing off."
