Birmingham bacon lovers rejoice.

The I Love Bacon food truck, an extraordinary idea that's taken off like a rocket since launching in Huntsville about three years ago, hits the streets of Birmingham and the surrounding suburbs starting today.

Patrick Horn, previously the executive chef at Satterfield's Restaurant in Cahaba Heights, will be behind the wheel of the Birmingham truck.

The I Love Bacon truck will venture out for lunch from about 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, and it will be parked near the car dealerships along Tom Williams Way off Grants Mill Road in Irondale, Horn said. After that, the truck will hit the road for Talladega for three days at this weekend's Alabama 500 NASCAR race.

And starting next week, Horn said, the I Love Bacon truck should be popping up in office parking lots and craft breweries and at special events all around Birmingham, Horn said.

The bacon-centric menu features sandwiches named after pop, rock and rap stars and songs, including the Carlos Santana (a brioche bun with flank steak, bacon, ham, Swiss and sunny-side-up egg, $13), the Joey Ramone (inside-out grilled cheese with sourdough, cheddar, Swiss, double bacon and caramelized onions, $9), the Miami Sound  Machine (a pressed Cuban sandwich with pork belly, ham and Swiss cheese on Cuban bread, $10), the Carrie Underwood (a spinach tortilla wrap with grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce and tomato, $10), the Notorious B.I.G. (grilled cheese with bacon, cheddar and mac and cheese on sourdough, $9), and the BLT of Curtis Loew (a classic BLT with bacon, heirloom tomato, romaine lettuce and cheddar cheese on sourdough, $9), as well as the Public Enemy Mac & Cheese (penne pasta with jalapenos, bacon and queso, $8).

"The Carlos Santana is the most popular," Horn said...
