Beyond Meat coming to menus at baseball stadiums, hospitals, schools

Plant-based protein options are becoming more widely available as the popularity of faux meats has begun to surge.

Now, food service provider Aramark says it will offer Beyond Meat burgers, sausages and other items on its menus at schools, hospitals, ballparks and other businesses. The deal has the potential to bring Beyond Meat’s foods to many new diners, as Aramark said it serves nearly 2 billion meals each year.

Aramark’s Beyond Meat offerings include a gumbo bowl with Beyond Sausage for hospital patients, a Caribbean-inspired Beyond Burger with black beans, avocado, pineapple and Sriracha sold at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Beyond Sausage with fried shallots at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City and Beyond Sausage brats at Citi Field in Queens, New York.

“The trick for us is to develop and offer unique meatless options that taste great and appeal to consumers who might want to try something new and those who follow plant-forward diets,” said Heidi Hogan, Aramark’s vice president of product development and culinary innovation.

The company said it has found that 60 percent of consumers want to reduce their meat consumption. Many of them pointed to health and weight management as their reasons for cutting back on meat.

“Early on, we understood that consumer preferences were driving a need for quality plant-forward offerings and our culinary team has been working with a broad range of plant-based products to create more enticing menu choices,” Hogan said.

The announcement came just days after Aramark competitor Sodexo announced a partnership with Beyond Meat competitor Impossible Foods.

Aramark partners with Beyond Meat to develop plant-based menu

Philadelphia-based Aramark will soon be serving menu items developed in tandem with Beyond Meat, whose popular plant-based products have increasingly entered the mainstream.

The companies announced a partnership Monday that will expand the offerings Aramark serves clients in more than 20 countries around the world.

Aramark cited data showing that more than 60 percent of consumers want to reduce their meat consumption, mostly for health and weight management reasons. The company also described the move as a climate-friendly initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The trick for us is to develop and offer unique meatless options that taste great and appeal to consumers who might want to try something new and those who follow plant-forward diets,” said Heidi Hogan, vice president of Product Development and Culinary Innovation at Aramark.

The new items from Beyond Meat will include the company's burgers, sausage, crumbles and other products.

A Gumbo bowl option designed for hospital patients will be part of a pilot program to test the appeal of Beyond Meat's sausage at healthcare facilities. One plate, called the Twisted Beat, features New Orleans-style “dirty grains” and greens topped with Beyond Sausage.

Several ballparks also will begin to sell Beyond Burger items at their concession stands, including a Caribbean-inspired option at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Sausage and brat will be served at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium and Citi Field in New York.

Philadelphia's Citizen's Bank Park recently debuted a vegan cheesesteak developed by Questlove that uses Impossible Meat. It's not yet clear whether Beyond Meat options will be headed to Phillies games and the city's other venues in the near future.

Beyond Meat shelves plans for Japan push, Mitsui says

Japan Today

Aug 13, 2019

TOKYO | Beyond Meat Inc has shelved plans to enter Japan, according to a Japan-based investor, focusing more on the U.S. market where it recently bolstered funding to fuel an expansion and beat out emerging faux-meat rivals.

Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co Ltd, which bought a small stake in Beyond Meat in 2016, said it previously planned to partner with the U.S. company to sell plant-based meat alternatives in Japan, but there was no longer such a project.

A Beyond Meat spokeswoman said she could not immediately comment, while a Mitsui spokeswoman declined to give a reason for the change, adding that future expansion in Japan was still possible.

El Segundo, California-based Beyond Meat sells pea-based burgers and sausages at restaurants and in supermarkets, and its shares have surged around 550% since their May IPO on expectations for growing demand for meat alternatives. It has also followed on with a secondary offering, which closed last week.

The company faces competition...
