Creek north of Keokuk runs black from hog facility run off

KEOKUK (WGEM) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources was called Sunday afternoon to investigate the report of an unnamed creek running black north of Keokuk.
The creek is near Mississippi River Road about 4 miles north of Keokuk.
DNR officials stated that they traced the release to an overflowing building at the Roland Weirather small hog facility.
Officials said to stop the release, Weirather needs to pump and land apply contaminated water on to dry land. DNR also told Weirather to dam the creek and flush it with clean water.
DNR field tests showed elevated ammonia levels. Water samples from the site and near the Mississippi River are being sent for laboratory testing.
Officials said there was no sign of fish being killed as a result of the release.
