The Trump administration is planning to provide additional aid to farmers impacted by the U.S. China trade war.

USDA Trade Undersecretary Ted McKinney says details on a new trade mitigation program will be released soon.

“We’re working very diligently,” he says. “This is an all hands on deck kind of thing at the President and Secretary Perdue’s request so that we can give immediate relief.”

The new program would be the second round of assistance for farmers since the $12 billion package last year.

He says the administration is sending a message that U.S. agriculture is not to be messed with.

Trade assistance for farmers 'days, not weeks or months away,' says U.S. ag leader

President Donald Trump's proposal to provide $15 billion in assistance to farmers slammed by escalating trade disputes could be "days, not weeks or months away," said a U.S. agriculture leader this week.

A second round of trade mitigation assistance is likely to include direct payments to farmers and money to develop trade markets but also "some new things," said Ted McKinney, the U.S. undersecretary for trade and foreign agricultural affairs.

Trump suggested last week the trade package would be used to buy U.S. farm goods to send as humanitarian aid to food-needy nations.

But McKinney said purchasing the crops that China would have bought could be a "very, very tall task," adding that the U.S. doesn't want to do anything that would "hurt potential commercial sales."

Iowa ag leaders said the trade assistance is appreciated but not the solution they hoped to see, especially a year after the trade wars began.
