Wisconsin cull cow markets started their slow seasonal rebound from their lowest levels in years. At Thanksgiving, the overall average cull cow price bottomed at $32.26/cwt, according to Equity Livestock Cooperative based in Baraboo, Wis.
By late January, prices had gained about $10. But that still falls far short of the $50 to $55/cwt prices Wisconsin farmers were receiving for cull cows through the first half of 2018.
“We have consistently mentioned that the October through December periods are the most negative time for cull cow prices. That was again the case in 2018,” says Mark Linzmeier, president of MarginSmart Dairy Analyzer.
