Japanese producer joins food tech company to create lab-grown Wagyu

WAGYU meat grown in a lab is the latest development to hit the alternative meat market.

 

Silicon Valley food technology company JUST has joined forces with Japanese Wagyu producer Toriyama to create lab-grown Wagyu beef.

 

The partnership, which is the first of its kind (where a cattle producer has partnered with a lab-grown meat company), will mean cells from Toriyama Wagyu cattle will be used by scientists in the JUST lab to create cell-cultured meat.

 

They plan to start with lab-grown Wagyu ground beef, with the hope to one day develop higher-end steak cuts.

 

According to a statement Awano Food Group, an international supplier of meat and seafood, will then market and sell the meat, similar to how they already sell conventional Toriyama Wagyu.

 

Toriyama is a family owned business that has been operating for more than 30 years.
