Overturned trailer leads to 23 killed cattle

A tractor trailer hauling cattle overturned on Friday in Bedford Township, killing 23 cattle, according to a news release from the Pennsylvania State Animal Response Team.
The cattle were on their way to a slaughterhouse in another state when the 5 a.m. crash happened in the 300 block of Bedford Valley Road, said Susan Smith, Bedford CART coordinator. Only six cattle survived and were secured at a neighboring farm, she said.
The dead animals were taken to a landfill, she said.

An early morning crash in Bedford County killed the driver of a tractor-trailer.
The rig, which was carrying cattle, overturned on Bedford Valley Road near U.S. Route 220 about 5:30 a.m. Friday, according to the state police at Bedford. Police said the single-vehicle crash occurred north of the Pennsylvania-Maryland line.
Bedford County Coroner Russell Styer identified the deceased truck driver as 34-year-old Justin M. Johnson of Winburne, Clearfield County. Styer said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and abdomen. He ruled the death accidental.
Styer said the crash took place at 332 Bedford Valley Road, Cumberland Valley Township.
Reports from the scene indicated that some of the cattle perished in the mishap and some ran into the woods after the rig traveled off the roadway, struck a guardrail and rolled onto its side over the southbound shoulder of the roadway.
